What if the historical epics, written by the victors, were told from another point of view. I gave it three stars so people would be more likely to read my review. It hit many of my "hot" buttons for an enjoying read: well-written, real character development, believable plot (yes, even fantasy needs believable plots) and some nice surprises (I really enjoy when I can't "figure out" everything that's going to happen). And where can it possibly be. Chickering's translation is loaded with tons of great commentary, history and contextual information about the poem. I can't recommend this book. In the end, Virginia is asked to be enter a pageant for an Indian queen. She isn't your typical heroine and has flaws, but this just makes it even more amazing that she does what she does.
